About Us and Our Work

We work in the Sunsari district, which is in the Terai region of East Nepal. The structure is fairly simple - in the UK unpaid trustees and volunteers are responsible for fundraising, providing strategic direction and advice to the local Nepalese team, and oversight, including use of charitable assets. In Sunsari, a small Nepalese team works with communities that have been identified through a consultative process as being in greatest need of support.

Our activities in Nepal are known as Programme Ujyalo Bhabisya. "Development Nepal" refers to the UK fundraising operation (which is run with no overheads), and "Programme Ujyalo Bhabisya" refers to the Nepal-based programmatic activities. Our focus is now on creating a sustainable future through the establishment of a strong and successful Ujyalo Bhabisya Co-operative to provide pro-poor access to basic financial services for the poorest people of Sunsari. Investing our time and resources into enabling the Ujyalo Bhabisya Co-operative to become self-sufficient, should generate funds in a sustainable manner for the traditional Programme Ujyalo Bhabisya activities.
